Launched in July 2011, the Find it, Fix it service tackles eyesores across the borough. In rapid response vehicles, the teams identify and fix problems such as littering, overhanging vegetation, fly tipping, graffiti and fly posting. In the first six months the team has dealt with over 450 jobs, with at least half of these jobs being undertaken on private land.
The scheme builds on the excellent work already being done by the council and Veolia in cleaning up the borough, which includes providing additional litter bins, improved waste and recycling collections and the use of the community payback scheme to clear grot spots. No matter who owns the land, either private or council land, the teams assess the problem and try to fix it – making Tower Hamlets one of the few boroughs in London to have such a service.
Cllr Shahed Ali, Lead Member for Environment, said: "The Find it, Fix it service has proved a strong addition in keeping the borough clean. It provides residents with a rapid solution to environmental problems and ensures a cleaner borough for the thousands of visitors to the Olympics later this year.
"The key to the service is that is doesn’t differentiate between council owned and privately owned land, ensuring that all problem areas are dealt with."
Veolia's contract manager in Tower Hamlets, Chris Hodges, said: "We are committed to tackling the issues of litter, fly-tipping and graffiti to help make the borough a cleaner and safer environment for all residents and visitors. The Find it, Fix it team, alongside the ‘Litter – not in our street’ campaign, works to improve eyesores and help residents to take pride in their community.”
The latest eyesore that the Find it, Fix it Team tackled was on Wrexham Road, where the team removed litter and overgrown vegetation.
The Find it, Fix it team is supporting the council’s anti-littering campaign ‘Litter – not in our street!’. Residents can report littering and other problems for the Find it, Fix it team via Streetline on 020 7364 5004.
