Tours will enable visitors to see not only the wide range of activities at the site but also biodiversity that is encouraged to develop in and around the site.
This event is part of an annual nationwide series of “wonder“ open days being held by leading recycling and waste management company Veolia Environmental Services, aiming to show residents what happens to their waste once it is collected.
The site was recently given prominence in the BBC Springwatch and Autumnwatch programmes, where viewers were able to catch a glimpse of the huge array of wildlife across the 680 acre site. The site hosts more foxes per square mile than anywhere else in the UK and is adjacent to three Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs).
Tours of the site will enable visitors to see up close active areas of the landfill site, areas of restoration, compost production and soils processing.
The event is being held in conjunction with Basildon Borough Council, which runs Wat Tyler Country Park, located adjacent to the landfill site. Visitors to the Park on the day will be able to view a series of exhibits and will be invited on tours of the landfill site, which will depart from the Park in 4x4 vehicles at regular intervals throughout the day from 10am – 4pm. No pre-booking is required.
Pitsea’s general manager Vinod Mehroke said: “After the success of last year’s event, I look forward to welcoming everybody to Pitsea. It is a great opportunity for people to see a host of wildlife on their doorstep in unusual surroundings. I hope everyone enjoys their day and finds their visit interesting and informative.”
