Litter – Not in our street!

Tower Hamlets residents are being encouraged to tackle littering in their community through the launch of a new anti-littering campaign - ‘Litter – not in our street!’

25 January 2012

Run by Tower Hamlets Council and Veolia Environmental Services, the ’Litter – not in our street!’ campaign, was launched on Brick Lane (24.01.12). Cllr Shahed Ali. Cabinet Member for Environment, joined forces with local residents and pupils from St Mathias Primary School to launch the campaign.

The new campaign raises awareness about littering, highlighting that people who drop rubbish are affecting everyone in their local community. It aims to empower residents take pride in their area and help them to stop local littering and report problem areas through the Find it, Fix it team.  Residents are also encouraged to take direct action through volunteering and community clear-ups.

Cllr Shahed Ali, said: “Tackling litter is a Mayoral priority and the campaign will lead the way in raising the issue.

“The council works hard trying to keep the borough litter free through street sweeping and the Find it, Fix it Teams, but everybody needs to do their bit and take responsibility for their litter.”

Veolia's contract manager in Tower Hamlets, Chris Hodges, said: "We are committed to tackling the issue of litter to help make the borough a cleaner and safer environment for all residents and visitors. We hope that this campaign strikes a chord with residents that a litter-free environment is a source of local pride and something each community should strive towards."

Carol Johnston, local resident and Clean Up UK volunteer, said: “It’s a great idea for a campaign that aims to make Tower Hamlets a cleaner, greener, more environmentally friendly borough. It would be great for everyone to get involved from all age groups to help make Tower Hamlets a beautiful borough, especially in the run up to the Olympics.”

Lene Milaa, Mile End Resident and Recycling Champion, said: “It’s common sense not to litter and everybody should consider what happens to their litter. The campaign should boost people’s consciousness about their neighbourhood. Not dropping litter is about being considerate to other people.”
