It is a borough of high cultural and ethnic diversity, with nearly 200 languages spoken by its inhabitants and around 50% of the population originating from Black Minority & Ethnic (BME) groups.
Covering an area of 11.4 square miles (29.6 km2), the borough stretches from Muswell Hill and Fortis Green in the West to Tottenham in the East, with 1,389 streets.
Over 25% of the borough is green space – some 600 acres – and includes Alexandra Park, Finsbury Park, Lea Valley Park and Highgate Woods, which is one of only eight Green Heritage sites in London.
Famous landmarks in the borough include Alexandra Palace, Bruce Castle, the Clock Tower in Crouch End and Tottenham Hotspur Football Club.
The Contract
Veolia Environmental Services commenced a 14 year contract in April 2011 to deliver recycling, refuse collection, street cleansing and ancillary services – including bulky items collection, Commercial Waste services, toilet cleansing and graffiti removal – on behalf of Haringey Council.
Also included is the operation of the two Reuse & Recycling Centres in Hornsey and Tottenham.
