Park Hill, which is managed by Urban Splash, joins the likes of City Hall and Sheffield Theatres with their connection to the network, which provides heating and hot water to over 140 buildings in Sheffield. District Energy uses energy that is generated through the burning of unrecyclable rubbish at the Bernard Road Energy Recovery Facility (ERF).
The ERF is managed by Veolia Environmental Services on behalf of Sheffield City Council. Park Hill, the largest listed building in Europe, has recently undergone an extensive refurbishment programme. It now offers modern one or two bedroom apartments with new residents due to move in shortly.
Tom Lawrence, Development Manager at Park Hill, said: “It is fantastic news that Park Hill has been reconnected to the district heating system. In times of ever increasing utility bills the district heating solution will provide cheaper energy than traditional sources and will also insulate occupiers from the full extent of wholesale energy price increases. In addition to this it is an extremely low carbon energy source."

Martin Simpson, General Manager of District Heating said, “Once a building has connected to the District Energy network, it no longer relies on fossil fuels to provide energy and hot water meaning the precious raw materials are conserved. By burning rubbish, we prevent the city’s non-recyclable waste from being sent to landfill generating a greener energy.”
