Background:
After a short spell as a caterer in the Merchant Navy, Gavin joined Sheffield City Council Highways Department in 1978. One year later he was working in the Cleansing Department as a Refuse Collector. He progressed to Assistant Operations Manager of Waste Disposal in 1986 and in 2001 when Gavin started working for Veolia Environmental Services he was the Assistant HWRC Manager for Waste and Recycling. Gavin was promoted to his current job in 2006.
With a massive list of qualifications behind him, Gavin's wall is running out of certificate space but he managed to find room for one more qualification and was awarded a degree in Business and Management in 2008.
Day Job:
Gavin's his name, recycling's his game. It's his job to make sure the people of Sheffield have got the facilities they need to recycle as much waste as possible. With his team of HWRC and Recycling Officers he looks after five Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs), more than 180 bring bank facilities.
Gavin's varied role means he could be involved in a number of things from finding sites for bring banks, to developing collection services, making sure the HWRCs are working properly and reporting how much recyclable material has been collected.
He also ensures that Veolia Environmental Services is meeting all health and safety requirements at the facilities whilst checking compliance with legislation and developing ways to deliver new initiatives.
Interests & Hobbies:
Although he has long since cut off his ponytail, Gavin is still a bit of a rocker at heart. Bon Jovi, Meatloaf and Bryan Adams are amongst his favourites and he loves nothing more than seeing his favourites live on stage.
Gavin is an Arsenal fan and a keen, if somewhat average (by his own admission), golfer. He also enjoys a night at the cinema in his spare time.
