Many exciting community projects including Glengall Wharf Garden run by the Burgess Park Food Project have used an array of boxes to plant shrubs and create a tool bench. Other projects such as Pembroke Gardens asked to receive a number of boxes to help to store tools, and also plant bulbs; and the Heygate Estate has already seen daffodils bloom from their blue boxes this year.
Now Veolia Environmental Services recycling and waste partners of Southwark Council are keen to provide the remaining boxes to any community groups in Southwark who can put them to good use, so that they can continue to be a benefit to the borough.
They could perhaps be used as waterproof storage of items in the garden, for planting flowers or herbs and vegetables, a tool bench or any other imaginative function which will see them being reused.
The surplus has followed the introduction of the new food waste collection service and alternate weekly collections of recycling and refuse last year when the blue boxes were replaced with blue bins.
If you belong to a community group in Southwark and feel you could put some of these boxes to good use please, contact us on 020 7525 2000 or email environment@southwark.gov.uk.
