New reuse and recycling centre hits best ever landfill diversion rate

Southwark’s new reuse and recycling centre, off Old Kent Road, is diverting more waste from landfill than ever before.

10 August 2012

In May alone 613 tonnes, the equivalent of six hundred and thirteen Elephants was diverted from landfill.

Landfill diversion rates have been increasing steadily since the reuse and recycling centre opened in January 2012 and currently the figure is at an impressive 85%. This is the highest diversion rate recorded since Veolia began working with Southwark Council in 2008.

The reuse and recycling centre is run by Veolia Environmental Services on behalf of Southwark Council enables residents to bring all types of household waste from paint to garden furniture to site for recycling, reuse or disposal.

Fabrice Bouchon, general manager for Veolia Environmental Services in Southwark commented: “I’m delighted that the reuse and recycling centre is performing so well. Of course residents are really helping to achieve this by bringing more and more items to us but we are also very well set up to make the best use of what is brought to site. The new reuse and recycling centre has been purpose built, making it much easier for residents to bring their waste and much easier for us to separate it correctly once it’s here.

“We are also making use of a number of reuse schemes, including paint, furniture, tools and computer equipment. Again, these schemes are easier to run now that we have the space and the modern facilities provided by the site.”

Items that can be brought to the reuse and recycling centre include, books, batteries, furniture, electricals and household appliances, building rubble, paint and much more .

Councillor Barrie Hargrove, cabinet member for transport, environment and recycling at Southwark Council said: "I'm delighted the new plant at the site on the former gas works on the Old Kent Road is diverting such a considerable volume of waste away from landfill which means substantial benefits to the environment and we won't stop there. We're committed to improving our diversion rates even further and where we can avoid waste altogether through reuse, there are even more benefits for our residents and the environment."
