Veolia
Environmental Services in Birmingham
Veolia Environmental Services Birmingham Limited
is a project company, set up in 1993 as Tyseley
Waste Disposal Limited, to manage the domestic waste
arisings from the city of Birmingham. The company
has a 25-year integrated waste management contract
with Birmingham City Council, to operate as its
strategic partner to deal with waste arisings, maximise
recycling and produce energy from waste.
In 1996 Veolia ES Birmingham built a state-of-the-art
Energy Recovery Facility in Tyseley, just to the
east of Birmingham City Centre, which takes 350,000
tonnes of Birmingham’s rubbish each year and
converts it into electricity. This energy production
is enough to power 41,000 local homes.
In addition, we also operate all five of the Household
Recycling Centres in the city which currently see
about 100,000 tonnes of rubbish delivered per year.
We are also responsible for operating two major
waste transfer stations and handle the majority
of materials collected via the Council-operated
kerbside collection schemes, which are increasing
across the city.
We aim to assist Birmingham City Council to continue
to be one of the top-performing local authorities
in terms of landfill avoidance; to help them to
improve on their current recycling rate of 17% and
to exceed their recycling target of 35% by the year
2011/12 by providing the necessary infrastructure
and services to succeed.
Veolia ES Birmingham Limited is proud to have both
ISO9000 and ISO14001 accreditation.
