 Pro-Grow sprouts yet another achievement!
18 April 2008
Staff at Veolia’s composting sites in Hampshire are celebrating the achievement of a quality mark for their highly regarded soil conditioner known as Pro-Grow. Pro-Grow has now succeeded in meeting all the requirements for PAS-100 and the composting quality protocol (CQP), which is awarded by The Composting Association and Checkmate International following a number of rigorous tests and checks. Recycling green garden waste means that landfill or other disposal methods are avoided, and that the green waste can be made in to a top-quality, environmentally sustainable product.

Preview points:
• Pro-Grow has achieved the highly coveted PAS-100 accreditation
• The accreditation means customers can have even more confidence in the product
• Accreditation ensures the process is carefully monitored and checked

Spring plants grow out of old Christmas trees
19 February 2008
As your Christmas memories fade, spare a thought for that sparse old Christmas tree you threw away at your local recycling centre… as it could be living on in your new spring plants! In Hampshire, our three composting sites which take green garden waste are making a high quality compost from the old trees with over 3,900 tonnes of green waste delivered to the sites in January. That’s the equivalent of 195,000 Christmas trees!

Preview points:
• What have we done with your old Christmas trees to make them live again?
• Your local site had deliveries the equivalent of 62 miles of Christmas trees in January
• How Pro-Grow allows the nutrients from old Christmas trees to help your new plants to flourish

 Heating your home with rubbish!
31 January 2008
Did you know that your non-recyclable household rubbish is used to generate electricity in one of Hampshire’s three state-of-the-art Energy Recovery Facilities (ERFs)? Although the first priority in Hampshire is recycling and we have an excellent record, there is always some waste leftover that can’t be recycled. Landfill is no longer a sustainable option and using the ERFs not only disposes of the rubbish, but also provides enough electricity to meet the demands of more than 53,000 homes in the county, which is 73% of the 71,985 homes in the New Forest District Council area. Using household rubbish as a source to produce electricity means we use less fossil fuels and are less at risk from a future energy crisis.

Preview points:
• How non-recyclable rubbish can be used to produce electricity
• Marchwood ERF could provide electricity for over 31% of New Forest homes
• Using Energy Recovery Facilities instead of landfill avoids the release of greenhouse gases

• Veolia opens new facility near Fareham, Hampshire
• £250,000 shredder will help to divert even more waste from landfill
• New facility will also reduce vehicle miles and the resulting emissions
