The London Borough of Brent incorporates nearly 1,700 streets within its boundaries, including the streets around Wembley Stadium, which are a prime focus on and after event days.
Veolia Environmental Services, working on behalf of Brent Council, invested in a wide range of street cleansing vehicles and equipment to mark the start of the new contract in April 2007. These vehicles encompass the latest technologies designed to improve efficiency in cleaning the streets and are in a variety of shapes and sizes so each can be deployed in the appropriate area.
The range of vehicles, from larger mechanical sweepers, to smaller flushers and sweepers, to cage vehicles for bags in streets and dumped rubbish, are the perfect complement to the traditional hand barrows used by our team of beat sweepers.
With satellite depots strategically placed around the borough, our ‘village approach’ ensures that each area of Brent is tackled thoroughly and effectively.
Aside from simply cleaning the streets, we regularly empty the 1,750 on-street litter bins around the borough and remove fly-tips.
Our efforts are paying off too: an independent survey of the cleanliness of the borough’s streets show that for 2007 a healthy 76% of the streets are at or above the required standard of cleanliness, compared to 68% in 2006. The target is to hit 81% or more by 2009.
We now clean hundreds of streets in residential areas three times a week instead of the previous two, as well as providing more frequent street cleaning for business areas and secondary shopping areas. In addition, some main streets benefit from being cleaned from 6am – 10pm seven days a week.
