The world famous Regent’s Park, based primarily in the City of Westminster but also partly in Camden, is visited by hundreds of thousands of people a year. Owned by The Royal Parks, it covers an area of 166 hectares (410 acres) and is home to London Zoo, an Open Air Theatre and the largest outdoor sports area in Central London.
The Park is fastidiously maintained, preserved and cared for by staff of Veolia Environmental Services, who work throughout the year tending to all areas of the park, including the Queen Mary’s Gardens, which in 2007 celebrated its 75th anniversary and features over 100 rose beds, each with between 150 to 225 rose bushes of many varieties and colours.
These roses are well manicured - the rose team visits each bed on a weekly basis, check for damage and diseased plants and are on a twelve day cycle where they are sprayed for aphids, black spot & mildew. The first flush of flower is usually on 6 June where the fragrance and colour is spectacular.
An Award Winning Area
Thanks to the supreme efforts of Veolia Environmental Services’ on-site team, Regent’s Park has won numerous awards in recent years, including retaining its Green Flag status – the national standard for parks and open spaces – and winning the BALI (British Association of Landscaping Industries) Awards.
Events
Many events and fairs take place in Regent’s Park each year and the team are always here to lend a hand, often helped with the clean-up procedures by colleagues from Veolia Environmental Services’ Camden and Westminster contracts. Events include the Camden Green Fair, Innocent Village Fete and Taste of London.
Garden in a Skip
In Spring 2007, Veolia Environmental Services joined a campaign established by the London Wildlife Trust and The Royal Parks to Save London’s Gardens. As part of the campaign, the three organisations collaborated to deliver a sustainable Wildlife Garden in a Skip.
The skip, which we provided, was turned into a miniature garden using only reused and recycled materials, including some leftover items from the Chelsea Flower Show such as a bath and shower.
The skip went on tour to various events, including the Camden Green Fair in Regent’s Park itself and the Hampton Court Flower Show, where it won a Bronze Award. |
