Westminster Street Cleansing

With 2,037 streets in the City of Westminster stretching a staggering 221 miles (369 km), Veolia Environmental Services knows it has a challenging job to do to keep the streets clean for the hundreds of thousands of residents and visitors who walk these streets every day.

That is why we clean the streets on a 24/7/365 basis, revisiting key thoroughfares and locations such as Oxford Street and Piccadilly Circus two or three times a day and at night to ensure the highest standards of cleanliness are met.

Indeed, in 2003 our efforts helped Westminster win the coveted title of Britain’s Cleanest City, and it has been nominated in every one of these awards before and since.

Using the latest in street cleansing technology, we operate a sizeable yet discreet service to provide optimum performance with minimum disruption to pedestrians and other street users.

A key feature of our service is our ‘village’ approach, with a range of teams focusing on specific areas. In its broadest sense, our operations are split between what we classify as Westminster North and Westminster South. However, within those two areas we distinguish even further, with strategically-located bases for our staff to operate from.

In Westminster North our principal depot for street cleansing is at North Wharf Road, where the majority of vehicles for the entire region are allocated. Streets staff based here primarily service the Paddington area and this is the North region’s only night shift depot.

Our Lisson Grove depot services the St John’s Wood area, while from our Woodfield Road base we clean the streets of Queens Park and Little Venice. Finally in the North, our Chiltern Street depot is responsible for Marylebone.

In the Westminster South region, there is an even greater distribution of depots to fully enhance our service provision in this area. The initial split is into three main areas: the South, which comprises Victoria, Pimlico, Belgravia and Knightsbridge, the West End and Mayfair.

In the South area, the largest in the region, there are three separate depots at Page Street (for Victoria and Pimlico), Ebury Bridge (for Pimlico and Belgravia) and Relton Mews (for Knightsbridge).

In the West End, there are two main depots, Dufours Place and Newport Place, the latter being the only depot in the South to operate days, evenings and night shifts. There is also a small, nights only depot on Drury Lane.

In Mayfair there is just the one depot, which is on Farm Street.
