With over 225,000 residents and encompassing an area of 18.3 square miles, Greenwich is a mid-sized London borough which follows the giant bend of the River Thames in the north of the borough, stretching west to east from Greenwich through Charlton and Woolwich to Thamesmead. It is flanked in the south by Eltham.
The most famous landmarks in the borough are primarily focused in the area of Greenwich itself. The Royal Observatory in Greenwich Park is historically renowned as ‘where time begins’ (hence Greenwich Mean Time), as the International Date Line and also Prime Meridian (0° longitude, separating the Western and Eastern hemispheres) pass through it.
Greenwich also has a rich maritime history, with the Royal Naval College, National Maritime Museum and Cutty Sark notable examples. Meanwhile, at the north west tip of the borough sits the O2 Arena, formerly the Millennium Dome.
It is in the north east of the borough though where Veolia Environmental Services has its operations. The Greenwich Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) in Thamesmead is one of the most technically advanced plants of its kind in the UK and the first to be established in an urban environment.
It supports recycling initiatives in London and the Home Counties by taking some of the materials collected for recycling from local authority areas including Veolia’s Westminster, Camden, Croydon and Brent contracts. |
