Greenwich Materials Recovery Facility

Operated and managed under contract to the London Borough of Greenwich. Capacity of up to 75,000 tonnes per year of mixed dry recyclables. Sorts cardboard, paper, steel and aluminium cans, plastic bottles and glass bottles and jars into marketable products. Predominantly handles materials arising from Local Authority collection services but can process materials from commercial premises, where material is of a similar composition.

The facility involves a highly automated sorting process with manual quality checks. Cost £8m to build. The facility was opened for operations in December 2004 with the official opening by Rt Hon Margaret Beckett MP in February 2005.
