The most easterly of all London boroughs, Havering is home to over 225,000 people in over 93,000 properties, covering an area of 43.4 square miles, making it one of the largest boroughs in the capital.
The borough meets the River Thames at Rainham, which is where Veolia Environmental Services has its activities. It heads north through Hornchurch and Upminster, then on to the borough’s principal town of Romford. Further north is Collier Row, Gidea Park and Harold Wood, with the peak of the borough consisting of Havering-Atte-Bower, Harold Hill and Noak Hill.
The Market, Liberty shopping centre and nightlife of Romford are perhaps the borough’s most well known features. Meanwhile, Havering Country Park in the north of the borough is a calm oasis away from bustling urban areas, as is Hornchurch Country Park towards the south. Indeed, over half the borough is taken up by greenbelt protected land.
Veolia Environmental Services has been operating the Rainham integrated waste management facility since 1980. Originally a landfill site since the 19th century, the spot now also contains a Materials Recovery Facility (MRF), composting and wood waste operations, soil screening and a Landfill Gas To Energy (LFGTE) plant. There is also a waste transfer station on the site.
