Lambeth

Touching the Thames in the north with the London Eye and Royal Festival Hall at its pinnacle and running south down to Streatham Vale, the borough of Lambeth is home to over 275,000 people and as such is the largest of Inner London’s 14 boroughs with also the highest population density.

It covers an area of 10.4 square miles and has five town centres: Brixton, North Lambeth, Clapham & Stockwell, Streatham and Norwood.

Veolia Environmental Services has a seven-year contract with the London Borough of Lambeth which began in April 2007. This contract covers refuse collection, street cleansing and recycling, alongside a separate contract running until the end of March 2009 for landscaping/grounds maintenance. We also have another five-year contract to operate a home-to-school bus service to 11 schools across the borough.

Special Events
The team in Lambeth are involved in many events during the year, underlining our important role in the communities in which we serve.

We are a permanent fixture at the annual Lambeth Country Show, one of the highlights of the borough’s events calendar with over 120,000 people flocking to it at Brockwell Park each July.  Aside from pre-event preparation and post-event cleaning of the area, we are also exhibitors.

In 2007 we attended with our brand new exhibition bus, which provides information on our activities in Lambeth, London and the UK, as well as our work within communities, corporate social responsibility (CSR) pledges and our commitment to the 3Rs – reduce, reuse, recycle.

We were also out in force for the Tour de France in July 2007, cleaning the Lambeth stretch of the route and decorating the area with plants and flowers courtesy of our landscaping team. The centrepiece of the display was a visually-stunning horticultural creation in the shape of two racing cyclists, which was met with widespread acclaim. The display, which has since been placed in various locations around Lambeth, was given the prestigious Special Award by the London in Bloom 2007 judges, who also presented the borough with a Silver Award for its displays as a whole.

In October 2007 we helped the borough commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the Abolition of the Slave Trade by planting bulbs, including daffodils, bluebells, snowdrops and crocuses as a lasting memorial on Brixton’s Tate Gardens, which itself was celebrating its 101st birthday.

We are also proud sponsors of the Streatham Redskins Ice Hockey Club, promoting sporting development and opportunities for youngsters.

We also sponsor and host the prestigious Lambeth Mayor’s annual charity river cruise, which raises money for the Mayor’s chosen charities. At the time of the 2007 event, the Mayor of Lambeth was Councillor Liz Atkinson, whose nominated charities were The South London Family Centre and The Hampton Project, so all proceeds from ticket sales went to these worthy causes.
