Veolia Environmental Services offers an edge-of-property recycling service using orange sacks and/or green boxes to all Lambeth’s residents in households and low-rise accommodation, plus large green recycling bins in communal areas for residents living on housing estates and high-rise properties. These are usually found in the same area as the shared general waste bins.
The service collects mixed recyclables so residents do not have to separate the various materials themselves, making participation as simple as possible. For added convenience, our recycling collections are made on the same day as refuse collections, so residents do not have to worry about putting out refuse and recycling on separate days.
The following materials can be recycled in your orange sack/green box:
- Paper and cardboard
All paper, cardboard, catalogues, directories and Yellow Pages. We now also accept food and drink cartons including Tetra Pak (please flatten all boxes)
- Glass bottles and jars
All glass bottles and jars (please rinse and remove lids). No broken glass please.
- Cans and tins
All drinks and food cans and aerosols (please rinse tins and ensure aerosols are empty)
- Plastic bottles
Plastic bottles only (please rinse and remove lids). Please note that no other types of plastic can currently be collected, for example, margarine tubs, yoghurt pots or any other types of plastic food containers.
However, please note that the following items cannot be recycled in your orange sack/green box:
- No yoghurt pots, margarine tubs or other plastic food containers (bottles only)
- No plastic bags
- No bottle caps or jar lids
- No broken glass, Pyrex, or window glass
- No kitchen food scraps or garden waste
- No foil, milk bottle tops or yoghurt pot lids
- No chemical containers or batteries
- No soil or rubble
- No clothes, shoes or other textiles
- No paint
Collected materials are sent to the Western Riverside Waste Authority for onward processing.
We also provide a garden waste collection service on a request basis using both reusable and biodegradable bags. Once collected the materials are composted and used in local parks and open spaces.
The following materials can be placed in your garden waste bags:
- Grass cuttings
- Leaves and twigs
- Weeds, plants and flowers
- Hedge trimmings
However, please refrain from placing any of the following items into the garden waste bags:
- Food waste
- General rubbish
- Soil, rubble, large branches
- Disposable nappies
- Any other recycling
In addition, we provide a special, separate collection of metal items, fridges and other waste electrical and electronic equipment.

Lambeth’s recycling rate is steadily progressing and the aim is to continue working together with residents to increase this rate even further. Currently Lambeth recycles just over 23% of its waste, which is slightly ahead of the London average. |
