It’s all looking very rosy!

10 July 2007

The Gardens feature over 100 rose beds, each with between 150 to 225 rose bushes of many varieties and colours, lovingly tended and cared for by on-site staff of Veolia Environmental Services, the UK’s largest waste management and environmental services company.

These roses are well manicured - the rose team visits each bed on a weekly basis, check for damage and diseased plants and are on a twelve day cycle where they are sprayed for aphids, black spot & mildew. The first flush of flower is usually on 6 June where the fragrance and colour is spectacular.

The team’s dedication to expert maintenance is outstanding, with staff often coming back to the park in their spare time to check everything is in its perfect state.

Francis Duncan, Veolia Environmental Services’ area manager, who has responsibility for Regent’s Park, commented: “This is a splendid occasion and it has been great to catch up with old friends. We are very proud of the work we do at Regent’s Park and it is very rewarding. The heavy rain we have had recently has been a challenge for us, but it has been overcome and the Gardens are still looking great.”

The guests at the event were addressed by Mark Camley, chief executive of The Royal Parks. He gave special thanks to some key people involved in Regent’s Park, including Tom Moss-Davies, Veolia’s head gardener, and his team of gardeners whose efforts he praised wholeheartedly. He added: “Parks and gardens need to evolve to meet the needs of the people that use them. We are very proud of all the amenities we provide here in Regent’s Park, including the sports facilities, the developed Avenue Gardens and, of course, the Rose Gardens.”
