Think Green on World Environment Day
4 June 2007
Following its ongoing collaboration with the London Wildlife Trust and Royal Parks in raising awareness of London’s diminishing gardens with the Wildlife Garden in a Skip, Veolia is spreading the green message further by encouraging Londoners to consider a range of simple initiatives that can help the city’s environmental health and reduce impact on climate change.
Try this small selection of simple suggestions:
• Reduce your waste – buy products with less packaging and invest in a home composting bin to turn food waste, tea bags and cardboard into a nutrient-rich compost for your garden.
• Reuse items – take your carrier bags back to the shops with you to put your new shopping in, or use recycled cloth ‘bags for life’, available from most supermarkets. Also save wrapping paper and gift bags to use again.
• Recycle glass bottles and jars – doing so will help provide power for your home. According to British Glass, the energy saved from recycling just one glass bottle will:
- Power a 100 watt light bulb for almost an hour
- Power a computer for 20 minutes
- Power a colour TV for 15 minutes - Power a washing machine for 10 minutes (Source: www.britglass.co.uk)
• Recycle paper – currently about 81% of the raw material used to make the newspaper you are reading is made from recycled paper (Source: NNIEAG). Increased paper recycling could see that figure approach the 100% mark, saving forestry and reducing carbon dioxide emissions.
Dan Lester, communications manager (London) for Veolia Environmental Services, comments: “London is the greatest city in the world and we want to help keep it that way for generations to come. World Environment Day provides the perfect opportunity to for Londoners to think green by making little changes in their daily lives and habits to help benefit the city’s environment both for now and for the future. Remember, only a little helps a lot.”
