Veolia Environmental Services operates a waste transfer station and Reuse and Recycling Centre by the River Thames at Northumberland Wharf.
Here, waste is received that has been collected in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. The site also accepts waste from businesses and industry in the wider area.
History
In January 2006, we began a new contract to operate and manage the two-acre site, retaining it from our previous contract dating back to 1992. The site was built five years beforehand by what was the Greater London Council and was operated between 1987-1992 by the London Borough of Tower Hamlets.
Services
The Reuse and Recycling Centre, which is open seven days a week, is a disposal point for household recyclables. Tower Hamlets residents can also purchase £5 compost bins from the site upon proof of residence as well as bags of compost.

Development
The site has undergone a great deal of redevelopment in the last few years, including jetty works, increased fire prevention and safety measures, dust extraction, a new crane, new containers and compactors, site vehicles and weighbridges.
Also a Reuse Centre for unwanted furniture for refurbishment has been built, as has an electrical goods store for waste electrical and electronic equipment.
Recycling has grown significantly at the site in the last few years. In 2003, there was just over 1,050 tonnes being recycled, which had risen to nearly 3,000 tonnes in 2006. This figure is expected to continue increasing year on year.
