Southwark

The London Borough of Southwark has a resident population of around 270,000 across its 17.9 square miles.

The widest part of the borough is in the north, where it meets the River Thames, then it gradually works down to a point at its southern edge.  This geographical shape of the borough is almost the exact opposite of neighbouring Lambeth, which is widest in the south and narrowest by the Thames.

Along the river, the borough begins in the west at Southwark and The Borough, passing by London Bridge then Bermondsey and out as far as Rotherhithe. Working down it incorporates Camberwell and Peckham ending up in Dulwich.

There are many famous landmarks in the borough, none more so then along the banks of the River Thames, where there is the Tate Modern, Oxo Tower, Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre and City Hall, home to the Mayor of London and the Greater London Authority. A little back from the river is the Imperial War Museum and Borough Market.

Many of the Thames’ famous bridges have the borough of Southwark on their south side, including Tower Bridge, London Bridge and the Millennium Bridge, while the famous old warship HMS Belfast is permanently moored in between Tower and London Bridges on the Southwark side.

Meanwhile Peckham is renowned for being the home of one of the most popular families in British television history – the Trotters, of Only Fools and Horses fame. Del Boy, Rodney et al lived in the area, on the admittedly fictitious Nelson Mandela Estate.

Veolia Environmental Services has been awarded preferred bidder status for the borough’s 25-year waste management contract. This is due to commence in the first half of 2008.

Services to be provided will include refuse and recycling collection, while a Materials Recovery Facility will also be built to process the recyclable materials.
