Located in the East End of London, Tower Hamlets is home to a diverse and vibrant community of approximately 200,000 people in its densely populated 7.6 square miles.
Along the River Thames are the areas of Wapping, Shadwell, Limehouse, Poplar and the Isle of Dogs, while moving north there’s Whitechapel, Stepney, Mile End, Shoreditch, Bethnal Green and Bow.
Famous landmarks include the impressive development of London’s ‘Manhattan on Thames’, Canary Wharf, including the UK’s tallest building at One Canada Square, the UK’s ‘Curry Capital’ Brick Lane and the Tower of London. Also in the borough is the famous Columbia Road Flower Market, which attracts visitors from all over every Sunday.
There are also over 100 parks and open spaces in the borough, including Victoria Park in the north east and Mile End Park, while the Regent’s Canal flows through the borough up from the River Thames at Limehouse Basin.
Veolia Environmental Services has an 11-year contract which began in February 2006 to provide refuse collection, recycling, street cleansing and winter maintenance services on behalf of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets.
Special Events
The London Marathon
Tower Hamlets hosts approximately 11 miles of the London Marathon course and we undertake cleansing and recycling activities throughout and after the event.
Mela Festival
The largest of the Brick Lane festivals attracting over 60,000 visitors to Brick Lane and two local parks. Throughout and after the event we are on hand to thoroughly clean the streets and provide opportunities for recycling.
Olympics 2012
Tower Hamlets is one of five London boroughs which will be hosting the Summer 2012 Olympics. The preparation for the games will transform whole swathes of the East End of London and hosting the games itself will bring its own challenges with thousands of spectators and worldwide coverage. Veolia Environmental Services expects to be achieving the highest standards of cleanliness throughout Tower Hamlets before, during and after the games.
