EnviroGrant makes gardeners out of Jeffries School pupils
16 July 2010
Pupils at Jeffries Primary School, Kirkby are soon to become gardeners in their very own allotment, thanks to a £300 donation from Veolia Environmental Services Nottinghamshire’s new EnviroGrant scheme.
The Harcourt Street Allotment Association has donated a piece of land to the pupils, which will be turned into a thriving allotment for them to enjoy. The school has set up an allotment club which will encourage pupils to be more aware of where food comes from and how it is grown. The club will also encourage them to develop an understanding of healthy eating; and will encourage the development of children’s social skills, especially those with special educational needs such as autism.
Amy Roberts, Waste Awareness Officer at Veolia ES Nottinghamshire (Nottinghamshire County Council’s waste management contractor), says: “We are delighted to be helping Jeffries School pupils realise their dream of running their own allotment. Our EnviroGrant donation will be used to pay for basic equipment for the children such as wellingtons, cagoules, high-visibility vests and gloves, as well as gardening equipment to ensure that their new allotment gets off to a strong start.”
Alan Cooke, Secretary of Harcourt Street Allotment Association, says: “Veolia’s EnviroGrant donation will enable community cohesion between the local Allotment Association and the pupils of Jeffries Primary School. It will also enable the children to gain a positive learning experience about nature and how it sustains life.”
Veolia Environmental Services Nottinghamshire’s EnviroGrant is a fund to which not-for-profit community groups based in the county of Nottinghamshire (excluding the city of Nottingham) can apply for grants of up to £1,000 for projects which improve their local environment.
