History

The Veolia Environmental Services Group is the no. 2 waste management operator worldwide, serving 53 million people and 553,000 customers. Veolia Environmental Services entered the UK market in 1990, and has since grown into an industry-leading company.

16 March 1990 - Veolia Environmental Services entered the UK waste management market.

December 1990 - Veolia Environmental Services wins its first contract - a 7 year refuse collection contract with Broadland District Council, renewed for a further 10 years in 1997.

July 1993 - Birmingham City Council awards a 25 year waste disposal contract to Tyseley Waste Disposal, which includes building a new Energy Recovery plant.

April 1995 - Hampshire Waste Services secures a 28 year integrated waste management contract with Hampshire County Council.

July 1997 - SELCHP is the first Energy Recovery plant in the UK to achieve ISO 9002 certification.

September 1997 - Acquisition of Leigh Interests, later to form the commercial and industrial waste management arm of the Veolia Environmental Services Group.

July 1998 - Environment Minister Michael Meacher MP inaugurates Hampshire Waste Services' Portsmouth MRF (Materials Recovery Facility).

March 1998 - The launch of Properpak, the Veolia Environmental Services Packaging Regulations Compliance Scheme.

April 1999 - Creed UK is formed to coordinate technical innovation throughout Veolia Environmental Services Group.

September 1999 - The UK College of Environment and Transport, later to become the Veolia Environnement Development Centre, opens its doors to provide training for Veolia Environmental Services' employees.

December 1999 - The grants awarded by the Veolia Environmental Trust exceed £7 million.

February 2000 - Veolia Environmental Services strengthens its range of services through the strategic acquisition of KD Offshore, based in Marchwood, Southampton - licensed MARPOL facility [Marine Pollution].

2000 - Veolia Environmental Services develops its transfer station capabilities with the opening of Brent, Derby and Birmingham transfer stations.

2000 - Integrated disposal contract in Hampshire confirms its reference status in Europe. The contract is also amongst the first to achieve government targets in terms of recycling.

July 2001 – Veolia Environmental Services signs an on-site contract with pharmaceutical giant Astra Zeneca at its Macclesfield site.

August 2001 - Sheffield City Council awards a 30 year waste collection and disposal contract to Veolia Environmental Services, to include a kerbside recycling scheme and the operation of Energy Recovery plants.

October 2002 - Veolia Environmental Services wins the waste management contract for the city of Portsmouth for seven years, serving 81,000 households.

November 2002 - Veolia Environmental Services and Westminster City Council renew their contract for seven years.

March 2003 – Westminster wins title of Britain’s Cleanest City.

April 2003 - Veolia Environmental Services officially starts as the new refuse collection, recycling and street cleansing contractor for Camden, serving 200,000 residents for the next 7 years.

April 2003 - East Sussex County and Brighton & Hove City Councils sign a 25 year contract with Veolia Environmental Services to deal with household waste. The contract includes plans for improvement of existing household recycling sites, sorting of separated recyclable materials, green waste composting facilities, a network of transfer stations and an Energy Recovery Facility.

September 2003 - The new 90,000 tonne per annum Energy Recovery Facility (ERF) at Chineham near Basingstoke is officially opened by HRH the Princess Royal.

October 2003 - The redevelopment of Veolia Environmental Services' Rushmoor Waste Transfer Station in Farnborough is completed. The site is now capable of handling over 85,000 tonnes of waste each year.

October 2003 – Veolia Environmental Services Birmingham wins three year contract to service the Bullring Shopping Centre.

November 2003 - Veolia Environmental Services successfully re-tenders for a contract with Tendring District Council to provide street cleansing, beach cleaning and a household recycling collection. The successful tender is the third renewal of the contract and will see the partnership between Veolia Environmental Services and TDC extending to almost 20 years.

December 2003 – Veolia Environmental Services wins emergency response and dry waste contracts with Midlands Expressway for the M6 Toll Road.

January 2004 - Veolia Environmental Services in Sheffield opens a new 25,000 tonne per annum Materials Recovery Facility.

March 2004 – Veolia Environmental Services in Marchwood wins the contract to service the Queen Mary 2 – the world’s largest cruise liner.

October 2004 – A team from Market Harborough win Collection Crew of the Year at the letsrecycle.com Awards for Excellence in Recycling and Waste Management.

December 2004 – Veolia Environmental Services scoops the prestigious Composting Association award for its Pro Grow soil conditioner range. Pro Grow has won several other awards, including Best Industry Recycling Initiative at the 2003 National Recycling Awards.

December 2004 – The underground salt mine, Minosus, gets the go ahead to be used as a storage facility for hazardous waste.

December 2004 – February 2005 – major contracts signed and started within the new Integrated Management Systems division with petrochemical giants BP and Shell.

April 2005 – Veolia Environmental Services begins a seven-year collection and recycling contract with Blackpool.

July 2005 – HRH Duke of Gloucester officially opens Alton’s new Materials Recovery Facility in Hampshire.

October 2005 - Veolia Environmental Services acquires the hazardous waste business from Shanks for £28 million.

November 2005 - A major new milestone was reached for the company with the adoption of a new brand system in which the four businesses will share the same name: Veolia Environmental Services (formerly Onyx), Veolia Water, Veolia Transportation (formerly Connex) and Veolia Energy (formerly Dalkia).

June 2006 - Veolia Environmental Services signs a 26 year integrated PFI contract with Nottinghamshire.

September 2006 - Acquisition of Cleanaway UK Ltd in September 2006 has now positioned Veolia Environmental Services (UK) Plc at the forefront of the UK waste management marketplace.

November 2006 - Veolia Environmental Services (UK) Plc gains full control of Minosus, the first facility of its kind in the UK, provides safe underground storage within a worked out area of a rock salt mine for the permanent disposal of a range of solid and granular hazardous wastes.

December 2006 - Acquisition of Hollands Recycling.

Today - Institutional and private investors represent the majority shareholding in Veolia Environnement.
