The UK creates 330 million tonnes per annum of waste. Whilst stringent legislation and the current social climate are creating an increase in levels of landfill diversion, it is still the most used method of waste management and disposal.
Landfill will continue to be an important disposal option into the future as:
| • |
factors such as costs, technical difficulties, geographical and political constraints may make it the only viable option for certain types of waste in some specific cases |
| |
|
| • |
residues from other disposal processes, such as contaminated recyclables, are landfilled. |
Veolia operates 13 active UK landfills and a number of non-active ones which the company must continue to monitor. All are highly engineered and managed to stringent Environment Agency (EA) standards. The EA may visit any of our sites at any time for inspection or monitoring purposes and will have full access to our comprehensive site data.
Once a landfill has reached the extent of its planning permit, the company is responsible for capping it, or undertaking restoration and providing a programme of aftercare.
Landfill management is not just about the disposal of waste, it is about controlling associated operations such as energy recovery and leachate treatment. And it is about managing the natural habitat in a sympathetic manner that will minimise the effect of our operations on the indigenous flora and fauna and allow it to flourish. |
