Located on the Thames Estuary Marshes, the site and surroundings of Pitsea landfill have played an important part in the area’s history and development.
For centuries the area was valuable grazing land and farmed into the late 1800s. The disposal of waste began in the early 1900s when sailing barges taking hay up the Thames to London returned laden with ash and waste.
The suitability of the site for landfill and the disposal operations that Veolia carries out today is due to the depth of London Clay underneath the landfill which protects the London Aquifer from contamination.
In 2017, the restored site will be returned to the community for nature conservation and controlled public access. In accordance with this, Veolia’s ongoing restoration work and environmental management ensure that the area contains a variety of habitats including scrub, meadow, grassland, reedbeds, ponds, tidal habitats and salt marsh. |
