Veolia has been part of the Rainham community for over 25 years. Local residents originally knew us as landfill operators, but over time have come to recognise us as significant investors in new recycling technologies that ultimately increase society’s ability and capacity to reuse and recycle.
When the company took over the site it was adjacent to large areas of despoiled and contaminated land. Planning permission granted in 1998 allowed the company to expand its operations to achieve the decontamination and clean-up of these surrounding areas. Since then Veolia has brought great improvements to the site and its immediate environment including removing car breakers and eliminating fly-tipping.
The site is bordered by Rainham Marshes Site of Special Scientific Interest and an ambitious road improvement programme has enabled us to facilitate access by road, cycle and foot to the Marshes and the RSPB reserve.
Apart from the £17 million the company has invested in the site and its surroundings, we contribute nearly £1 million per annum to the Borough.
Additionally around 200 people, many of them local, work at the site. Many employees have received comprehensive training in a range of disciplines including IT and Health and Safety.
