Plastic and Cans

We produce 20 times more plastic today than we did 50 years ago. It is estimated that each one of us gets through 290 plastic bags in one year!

Households in the UK use about 208 aluminium cans and 600 steel cans every year. If we recycled all the aluminium drinks cans in the UK there would be 14 million fewer wheelie bins. Every steel can is 100% recyclable and is used in the manufacture of many things from aeroplanes to more steel cans.

Follow these simple tips

Reduce - Where possible don't buy food packaged in lots of plastic. For example, buy fruit loose rather than in plastic trays.

Reuse - Plastic containers to store leftover food in the fridge or dry goods in the larder.
Make a scarecrow out of old cans, to ward off the birds from your garden.

Recycle - Take your plastics to the recycling bring sites located across the city. Find out where your nearest or most convenient one is.
