Model village is not rubbish!

This week, Veolia Environmental Services joined forces with three S10 schools to officially open their ‘model village’ with a twist. Ashdell Preparatory School, Birkdale Junior School and Sheffield High School have constructed an aerial view of S10 by reusing everyday waste items like cardboard packaging, bottles, cartons, cans and even sweet wrappers!
With Tropicana juice carton houses and newspaper car parks, the 6m x 4m model includes all green spaces and trees and even Smartie boxes as cars! The grand opening took place today (30th June), with the model staying on display for three days, allowing children, parents, staff and friends from each school to view their own handiwork.
‘Grand opener’ Kate Hodgson, Waste Awareness Officer at Veolia Environmental Services in Sheffield comments: “I would like to thank Ashdell School for inviting me to officially open their model village. As Waste Awareness Officer, it is my job to teach the children of Sheffield the 3Rs – reduce, reuse, recycle. The children of today are the recyclers of tomorrow and have an important role to play in the future of our planet; this is why we encourage them to follow the 3Rs”
Heidi Wragg, Art Coordinator at Ashdell School adds: “This has been a fantastic project and I am really proud of the three schools that took part. No paint was allowed; I wanted the pupils to see exactly how many materials from everyday life they could reuse or recycle – it was a real eye opener. Like many schools, Ashdell is involved in promoting the awareness and education of issues concerning the environment and this project, in particular, focused on recycling whilst linking in with Art, Geography and Maths. The children really used their imagination whilst learning the recycling message.”
