Thank you for using your new recycling service!

30 April 2010

Sheffield City Council and Veolia Environmental Services are delighted to announce that the first residents in Sheffield to receive the new recycling service are making it a huge success! 39,000 households across the north of Sheffield are using a new blue box to recycle their paper and card and their blue bins to recycle glass bottles and jars, plastic bottles and cans. Thanks to their efforts, a whopping 266 tonnes* were collected in just the first two weeks.

Veolia Environmental Services has been out and about to talk to some of the residents who are now using the new service:

Joanne, age 44, from Stocksbridge comments: “As a keen recycler, I was concerned that the new box would not be large enough for the amount of paper and card that I produce but I was very pleased to hear that the new recycling service is collected twice as often - every two weeks! This means that I can still recycle just about the same amount of paper and card whilst also being able to recycle lots of other things now as well.”

Maggie, age 70, from Ecclesfield says: “Many of my younger neighbours have been able to carry the box to the kerbside but I knew I wouldn’t be able to manage it. When I received my new box and read the information pack that came with it, I realised that an assisted collection service was available. The Call Centre staff were very helpful and now I just leave my box outside the front door and the recycling collector collects it and empties it before returning it to the doorstep for me. It is great that I don’t have to worry and now I can also use my blue bin for lots of other materials that I couldn’t recycle at home before.”

For residents who are unable to lift the box or move their wheeled bins due to a medical or age related reason, help is available through our assisted collection service. To request this service please contact Veolia Environmental Services on: 0114 273 4567.

Joanne and Maggie were both pleased to hear that if residents produce a lot of paper and card they can request a second blue box and that it doesn’t matter if the paper and card gets wet. However, residents currently using nets to cover their boxes in the north of Sheffield will have them replaced with an elasticated waterproof hat by no later than October 2010 and the rest of the city will receive a waterproof hat with their box.

For residents who have not yet received their blue box, the new recycling service is coming soon! The city has been divided into four phase areas and all areas will have the service before the end of November 2010. Please look out for the tags that will appear on your black and blue bins to tell you when your service is due to change. Until then, please carry on using your blue bin for paper and card.
