Name: Anita Fieldsend

Job Title: Contract Supervisor

Assistant Operations Manager

Background:

Anita has been working in waste management for 25 years and now undertakes the major task of organising teams of refuse collectors and vehicles.

Her first job in the industry was working for Sheffield City Council's Cleansing Department in 1983 as an Assistant Manager. Six years later she moved over to the Valuation Unit of the department but moved back to an Assistant Manager role in 1999, this time working with the refuse collection team.

Day Job:

Getting refuse collectors and bin lorries to the right areas of the city on the right day is all part of the job for Anita. The crews are usually out on the streets by 7.00am so it is an early start every day.

She has to make sure the lorries are ready for a busy day collecting waste and recycling and that there are enough refuse collectors to get the job done.

As the day goes on, Anita and the other Assistant Managers have to make sure they know how the refuse collectors progress so that they can make sure they are one step ahead if problems arise. They are on hand to deal with any issues, provide information to the Call Centre and deal with any queries that might come in from the public. It's a busy day with never a dull moment!

Interests & Hobbies:

Anita works with St. Luke's Hospice with her son Karl who raises money by doing the ‘Coast to Coast’ ride. Using the skills of her day job, she arranges equipment and locations for the event.

She loves walking with her dog as well as gardening, DIY and listening to music. Sitting down with a good book is always a treat for Anita - she enjoys a true story to get her teeth into.

Name: Denise Valavani

Job Title: Contract Supervisor

Assistant Operations Manager

Background:

We are lucky to have Denise on our shores. Born in Sheffield but brought up in Australia, she came back to her home town in 1970 before jetting off in 1980 to be a holiday rep. Whilst repping in Greece in 1993, Denise married and then had two children before returning to Sheffield in 2000.

Back in Sheffield (and fluent in Greek), Denise got a job with Sheffield City Council at the Call Centre on Bernard Road. When Veolia Environmental Services secured the waste management contract in Sheffield, Denise moved to Lumley Street Lorry Park to help set up new systems for the refuse collection team. She has been promoted from an Administration Supervisor, to a Project Manager and now an Assistant Manager.

Last year Denise completed a Level 3 certificate in First Line Management.

Day Job:

What does it take to get 40,000 bins of household waste emptied from homes across Sheffield every day? The answer: sheer determination, a level head, fantastic organisational skills and great people skills. These are qualities that Denise has and she uses them every day. She uses them everyday to ensure the bins in the city are emptied when they should be.

She works in a team of four Assistant Managers who make sure that 160 refuse collectors are in the right place at the right time. Providing information to drivers to allow them to do their job, ensuring everyone is working to the correct health and safety procedures, dealing with vehicle problems and answering queries from the public are all jobs that Denise can find herself doing on a daily basis.

Interests & Hobbies:

After working hard all week, Denise likes to spend her well earned cash on retail therapy… just for relaxation purposes you understand!

Denise fills her spare time with walking at Chatsworth and Rother Valley, reading science fiction books and cooking Greek dishes (she's an expert!). She also has an artistic flair and loves to create oil paintings and cartoons for children.

Name: Darren Hollis

Job Title: Recycling Service Collection Driver

Recycling Service Collection Driver

Background:

Darren has been driving trucks and Heavy Goods Vehicles for most of his working life. He joined Veolia in 2002 after working as a long distance lorry driver for about 10 years before that.

When Darren first started working for Veolia he worked on the grey wheelie bin collection team as a spare driver. He got to know all the rounds really well because he would be in different areas every day. When the blue bins were introduced to Sheffield in 2003 he was the first driver to work on the service. Because of his extra special advanced skills as a driver he was given the job of collecting blue bins from rural properties and those that had restricted access. If anyone could get to these hard to reach places with a huge collection vehicle – Darren could and that is why he got the job!

We needed Darren's expertise to help get the new recycling service off to a flying start so he now works with the blue bin and blue box collection teams.

Darren is a graduate of an advanced driving course and an award winning considerate driver, so, we are lucky to have him on the Veolia team and the streets of Sheffield!

Day Job:

Darren's day starts at 6.30am. He meets his collection team, picks up his vehicle and his round details from the operations office at Veolia. Darren drives the team to whatever area of Sheffield is scheduled for a collection. He has to skillfully manoeuvre his vehicle around the streets whilst the other members of the team empty your recycling into the special compartments at the back of the vehicle.

When the vehicle is full of your recycling, Darren takes the vehicle to unload the contents ready for sorting. When the vehicle is empty he goes back out in the search of more blue bins and blue boxes to empty.

Darren loves the variety of people and places he sees on his rounds. However, inconsiderate drivers and pot holes can make him have a really bad day!

Interests & Hobbies:

Football dominates most of Darren's free time. Once a pretty nifty player himself he now enjoys watching Sheffield United and supporting his daughter with her football playing.

He says his driving job doesn't stop when he gets home. He is often given the job of taxi driver to get his children to wherever they need to be!

He likes to relax by walking the dog and keeping fit at the gym.
