Energy Recovery

62% of waste collected in Sheffield is taken to our Energy Recovery Facility (ERF) in Sheffield where it is burnt at extremely high temperatures in a specially controlled environment. The heat created from the process is converted to steam and used to generate electricity for sale to the National Grid and also turned into hot water to provide heat and hot water for the many buildings connected to the city's District Energy Network.

Monitoring systems operate 24 hours a day to allow us to ensure the performance of the ERF meets all environmental guidelines regulations and legislation.
