Kerbside collection of plastic bottles comes to North Shropshire

19 April 2010

People living in the former North Shropshire District Council area will soon be able to recycle plastic bottles from the kerbside for the first time, when a new collection service starts next month.

The service is being introduced by Shropshire Council and their waste contractors Veolia Environmental Services. It was introduced in the former Oswestry borough in February and will be rolled out across the rest of the Shropshire Council area over the next 12 months.

Collections of plastic bottles in north Shropshire will be made for the first time in the week commencing Tuesday 4 May alongside the existing recycling collection, and then every two weeks after that.

From Monday 26 March for two weeks, a new kerbside collection box will be delivered to all households in north Shropshire – in which people will be asked to place their plastic bottles and aluminium cans for collection. A leaflet giving more information about the new service will also be delivered, along with a new collection calendar.

Members of Veolia staff will also be out and about across north Shropshire from today (Monday 19 April) until 14 May to explain the new scheme to residents. (see notes for details).

Under the new service, collection crews will collect plastic bottles from the kerbside along with the other recyclable materials that are already collected, namely paper, glass and cans.

Residents will be asked to wash their plastic bottles, remove and discard the lids, and place the bottles into their new box, with their cans.

Larry Wolfe, Head of Waste Management with Shropshire Council, said: “The collection of plastic bottles from the kerbside has already proved extremely popular with residents in the Oswestry area and is helping to boost the amount of household waste that is recycled in Shropshire. I’m pleased that this service will now be available to people in the north Shropshire area from the beginning of May.”

Donald Macphail, Managing Director of Veolia Shropshire said: “Only plastic bottles can be put out for collection. This includes most kitchen and bathroom bottles such as milk containers, soft drink bottles, shampoo bottles, and washing-up liquid bottles. At present this is the only type of plastic which is widely and cost-effectively recycled in the UK. Other types of plastic such as yoghurt pots and margarine tubs will not be collected.”

The plastic bottle collection service will be introduced in the former Shrewsbury & Atcham borough in August 2010 and the former South Shropshire district in November 2010, with the former Bridgnorth district due to follow by March 2011.

Residents in these other areas should continue to use local recycling centres to recycle plastic bottles and are asked not to hoard plastic bottles until their collection begins as the collection vehicles will not be able to cope with the resulting volumes.

For more information call 0345 678 9007 or visit www.recycleforshropshire.com.

When the service was trialled in Whittington in late 2009 and early 2010, it was found that nearly 90 per cent of residents who regularly recycle at the kerbside added plastic bottles to their recycling boxes.
