Whitesmith Composting Facility

We are proposing to build an enclosed composting facility at Whitesmith in the centre of the county, with the capacity to handle 46,000 tonnes a year of principally green waste from the area’s network of Household Waste Recycling Sites, to produce organic soil conditioner. Currently, open windrow composting is carried out on three sites in East Sussex but these facilities are not sufficient to meet future needs.

Planning – Veolia Environmental Services has gained planning permission from East Sussex County Council, subject to legal agreement, for this facility.

  The Facilities

To put the strategy
in place, a network of facilities needs to be developed, including
a Materials Recovery Facility, an enclosed Composting Facility,
an Energy Recovery Facility and Waste Transfer Stations. Remaining local landfill will also be utilised for any non recoverable waste.
