Currently
most of the area’s bin lorries tip directly
into landfill sites, often travelling large distances.
We will reduce traffic movements by providing new
waste transfer stations where waste and recyclables
can be bulked into larger onward loads. As well
as dedicated waste transfer stations, some of the
facilities we plan will also have a waste transfer
area, allowing us to transport waste between our
sites as efficiently as possible.
Maresfield Household Waste Recycling
Site and Waste Transfer Station
At Maresfield, we are proposing to build a Waste
Transfer Station to serve the north of the area,
and a new Household Waste Recycling Site, which
will replace the existing Sunday morning mobile
service in Uckfield. The Waste Transfer Station
will be used to bulk up any recyclable and non-recyclable
waste for onward transport to appropriate facilities
and will have the capacity to handle 85,000 tonnes
of waste a year. The Household Waste Recycling Site
will take a wide range of recyclables and materials
for reuse.
Veolia Environmental Services has gained planning
permission from East Sussex County Council for this
facility. Construction commenced in February 2007
and the site is expected to be operational in Spring
2008.
Pebsham Waste & Recyclables Transfer Station
& Depot
We have submitted a planning application
to East Sussex County Council for a waste transfer
and recycling depot at Pebsham. Subject to permission,
the facility will be based at the former Reprotech
site on the Freshfields Road, and will be located
within the existing buildings. The facility will
handle up to 85,000 tonnes of household recyclables
and waste each year. Recycling and residual waste
collected in the Hastings and surrounding area will
be bulked there for onward transport to recycling
companies and for energy recovery, in the form of
electricity. The facility is planned to be operational
by April 2007.

The Facilities |
|
To
put the strategy
in place, a network of facilities needs to be
developed, including
a Materials Recovery Facility, an enclosed Composting
Facility,
an Energy Recovery Facility and Waste Transfer
Stations. Remaining local landfill will also
be utilised for any non recoverable waste.
