Recycling
is a very important part of the strategy, as it
allows us to extract materials from the waste stream
and recover value from them. Recyclables such as
paper, card, cans and plastic bottles which we receive
via kerbside collection schemes will be sorted at
a materials recovery facility and sent for reprocessing
into new products.
The materials recovery process
Dry
recyclables are deposited in separate storage areas.
Newspapers and magazines, cardboard, junk mail and
paper packaging are unloaded in one area and cans
and plastic bottles in another. Both streams are
pre-sorted to remove any non recyclable items and
then sorted by material into cardboard, newspaper
and magazines, mixed paper and card, aluminium,
ferrous metal and mixed plastic. These products
are then transported to specialist companies for
recycling into new products, such as newsprint,
clothing and new food and drink cans.
What you can do
Make use of your
local kerbside recycling collection, deposit recyclables
at your local Bring Banks and make use of your Household
Waste Recycling Sites.
What happens to your recycling?
In Brighton & Hove, we are responsible for making
sure that the material collected through the black
box kerbside scheme is recycled into new products.

as what happens to the material which is collected
at the area’s household waste recycling sites.
